The massive 3 liter 60 deg DOHC V12 was far ahead of its time. With an advanced 4v per cylinder configuration and using twin sequential Roots supercharger technology developed by Daimlers aero division it was capable of power output close to 500 hp. It implemented a total of nine oil pumps to ensure proper lubrication while spinning to a RPM limit of 8200 rpm

Vintage Fest 2009 Limerock Park. Limerock,CT

The W154 had a massive 88 gallon combined fuel capacity between its fore and aft mounted tanks. These tanks contained a highly toxic mixture of methyl alcohol, nitrobenzene, acetone, and sulfuric either needed to make the 480 hp the twin Roots supercharged engine was capable of. Average fuel consumption during a race was approx. 2.8 mpg. Checking the level of the highly combustible mixture was done through these windows as not to risk unnecessary exposure during race time

The W154 may be the most significant pre war factory race effort. It incorporated many innovations including fuel injection and hydraulically adjustable suspension. This particular chassis No.15 was one of the last produced and was raced by legends Hermann Lang, Manfred von Brauschitz and Rudolf Caracciola

After several years of meticulous restoration efforts by The Collier Collection it was brought out and run at the Limerock Vintage Festival on Labor day 2009. This was its first outing at a race track in 70 years, almost to the day.

Front suspension was double wishbones, using longitudinal torsion bars. Brakes were out board hydraulic drums which required a massive amount of air for cooling when stopping in speeds in excess of 200mph, hence the screened intakes and turbine like fins

Vintage Fest 2009 Limerock Park. Limerock,CT

Pictured here is the ground-breaking (for the time) DeDion rear suspension. Combining the benefits of independent suspension while negating the dangerous side effects of swing axles. It incorporated a complex and highly advanced system of hydraulics that allowed the driver to compensate for weight shift caused by fuel consumption between the fore and aft fuel tanks.
